My name is Ije Uzor, I am a Nigerian born American living, wife and mama. If you have heard the song ‘African Queen’ then you will get an insight into how unapologetically Nigerian and African I am especially when I wear Ankara pieces.
Ankara, also known as “African prints”, is a 100% cotton fabric with vibrant patterns. It is usually a colourful cloth and is primarily associated with Africa especially West Africa because of its tribal-like patterns and motifs. You can make anything with Ankara but what I love the most about Ankara pieces is the confidence and extra oomph in your step from knowing that you are a vibe ☺.
Growing up in Nigeria as a teenager, I watched my mum and aunties transition from wearing imported western wear to embracing our beautiful vibrant Ankara. When I moved to America, my mum would send me beautiful Ankara outfits that I could wear for different occasions.
I would often get stopped by different people wanting to know where I had gotten my beautiful outfits from. I would also get requests to make outfits for people. Eventually, I turned it into a little hustle on the side, connecting women in America to designers and dressmakers in Nigeria.
Then I produced my very first Ankara dress, it was a huge hit and even got replicated by some websites. After a few Sold Out designs, I have decided to take the plunge and make Ankara outfits more accessible to women all over the world.
Sonma (pronounced Son-Ma) means ‘So beautiful’ in the Igbo language. The name was inspired by the fact that it is important that everything within our control feels beautiful and we are constantly reminded that every bit of us is what makes us beautiful, much like the different colours of the Ankara fabric.
Sonma was born out of a desire to bring Fun, Flirty and Fabulous clothing with a cultural influence. It is indeed the best of both worlds, an infusion of Rich vibrant prints in western style designs.
So How Does Sonma Work?
We have created a little circle
- The Clothes are made and fabrics are sourced from amazing artisans spread across different parts of Nigeria with one thing in common, creating a better future for themselves and their families by working very hard for a brighter future despite the odds. Every item you buy, not only puts money in their pockets but also brings them pride at what they have achieved. A dress they have made is being worn and cherished by someone most likely of a different culture.
- You in turn get to own not just a piece of clothing but, a legacy that your purchase has helped to grow. Our clothes are unapologetically African.
- Finally, you will be supporting a black-owned business, a dream of building a legacy and my greatest pride is connecting our history and past to our present and future through our clothes.
